Inside the Guide

A working vocabulary, not a whitepaper

Nine pages built to be used: in program design, proposals, board reports, and everyday copy.

01

The domains of a full life

Six domains that give the field a whole-life picture of flourishing: a complete map to design and describe programs against.

02

The Flourishing Index, precisely

What the validated self-report wellbeing measure is, and, just as clearly, what it is not. Precision is what makes it credible.

03

A shared vocabulary

Terms defined exactly, so your programs and reports speak the same language as the wider field.

04

The case for a common language

Why clients, funders, partners, and your own team all read a shared standard as a mark of seriousness.

05

Speaking it well

A practical instead-of, say-this table that keeps your descriptions confident, credible, and exact under real scrutiny.

06

Two clear pathways

Free under Creative Commons for non-commercial use, and commercial licensure administered by Flourishing Hub when a product containing the Flourishing Index is sold.

Who It Is For

Written for the people who lead wellness

The guide assumes competence. It adds a recognized standard to good work already underway.

Builders

Founders & product leads

Teams building wellness platforms, programs, and offerings who want a validated measure, and a recognized mark, inside what they make.

Practitioners

Coaches & program leaders

Practitioners who already use credible tools and want a shared language their clients, peers, and accreditors recognize.

Mission-driven

Nonprofits & researchers

Teams measuring flourishing in research, education, and community programs, where the Flourishing Index is free under Creative Commons.

Plain Terms

What the Flourishing Index is, and is not

Being precise is part of what makes it credible. The guide is equally direct.

It is

  • A validated self-report wellbeing measure, spanning the domains of a full life
  • Created by the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University
  • Used and trusted worldwide
  • A complement to the credible assessments you already use

It is not

  • A clinical assessment or medical instrument
  • A diagnostic or screening tool. It does not detect, diagnose, evaluate, or treat any condition
  • A prediction about anyone’s future health or life outcomes
  • A replacement for the professional tools and judgment your field relies on

The Flourishing Index reflects what a person reports about their own flourishing, nothing more and nothing less. That honesty is exactly why it can be trusted.
